Montgomery County Swim League

Representatives’ Meeting

Minutes of June 12, 2003

Call to Order:  Marty Cohen called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm.

Advertisers:  The following MCSL Handbook advertisers gave presentations to the membership:

                        Planning for College

Please support our advertisers.  Their support helps us fund our programs.

Change in board members:  Bill Bullough is retiring after many years with the County.  Pam Ambrose will be taking his place on the board as liaison with the County aquatics department.

Rule clarification:  We have been stressing in the officials’ clinics that for purposes of the backstroke start, “legs” means “ankles.”  Swimmers cannot hold onto the “legs” above the ankle area.  This is a safety concern.

July meeting:  Since we no longer have a September reps meeting, we will vote on the calendar for the 2004 season at the July meeting.  We will also vote on new members to the board and on officers.  If someone is interested in serving on the board, he or she should email Marty Cohen, president@mcsl.org, or Bill Ferguson, rules@mcsl.org.

Iona Brown award:  Each year the League presents an award in memory of long-time rep Iona Brown to a person who best exemplifies the spirit and values of the MCSL.  The award is presented at All Stars.  Please email all nominations to president@mcsl.org.

Automation:  Check the automation site throughout the season for updates.  If you have misplaced your copy of Meet Manager, contact Mike Lincoln.  After a meet, the home team must get the meet results to their division rep by 2pm.  The league does not support email entry exchange.

Invitational meets:  Coaches’ Invitational Long Course and the All Star meets are held at the Rockville Swim Center.  Parking has been an issue in the past.  Please have all your attendees note the parking procedures for these meets—the procedures will be posted on our website.

Web:  If you have filled a coaching position, please let Bob Hincke know (web@mcsl.org).  Officials’ certifications are posted shortly after the officials’ clinics.

Forms:  DQ cards, relay cards, and meet cover sheets were distributed.

Officials’ Clinics:   Attendance at the clinics has been very good.  Please put these new officials to work.  There is a stroke and turn only clinic is Tuesday, June 24 at Potomac Woods.

N Division:  If you swim your meets on an odd date, don’t change the template.  Mike Kelley is still looking for teams to fill in N Division meets.  Contact him at mentor@mcsl.org.

Six Flags:  Orders for tickets are due to Tracey Glass by July 7th—or July 13th if you deliver your order in person to Tracey’s house.  All payments must be by team, not personal, check.  Make the check out to Six Flags.  The cost is $19.95 per person; meal vouchers are $7.35.

Friendly reminders:  Bill Bullough cautioned all teams to keep noise under control.  He stressed that B meets should be run efficiently.  Figure out early in the evening where the bottlenecks are and fix them so that all children get a chance to swim and get home at a reasonable hour.  Officiating should be the same at B meet as at A meets—the same rules of swimming apply.

Clinics:  A coaches’ clinic and a meet management clinic were held after the regular meeting adjourned.

Next Meeting:  The next meeting will be held at the Executive Office Building cafeteria on Thursday, July 10, 2003, 8:00 pm.  Please be sure to attend.  We will be voting on next season’s schedule.

Respectfully submitted,

Sally MacKenzie
